8 Healthy Habits for Weight Loss

1. Watch Your Portions

Portion control is a key challenge to Americans pursuing weight loss. "The best way to control the calories is to go with portion control," says Dr. Gerbstadt. Piling food onto your plate can make you feel pressured to eat it all. Start with small portions, and go back for (a little) more if you're still hungry. Keep in mind that your stomach will grumble early on, until it has shrunk to adapt to the smaller meals you're now eating.

Portion control is doubly important when eating out. "Most people are catching on to the fact that when you eat out at a restaurant, the calories are two to three times what you really need for that meal," says Gerbstadt. "You might get a salad and an appetizer and call it a meal, rather than get a salad and an entrée."

2. Eat Slowly

It takes a little while for your body to realize that you've eaten and to stop sending signals of hunger. If you slow down and savor your food, you probably will eat less before your body acknowledges that you're full.

3. Eat Your Vegetables First

Vegetables contain plenty of fiber and bulk but few calories. By eating them first, you might eat less of any fatty or high-calorie items on your plate.

4. Don't Skip Meals

Skipping meals sounds like a good idea, but it actually undermines your weight-loss plan. Your body thinks it is being starved and starts building body fat in an attempt to store energy away for later. On top of that, you're likely to be even hungrier for your next meal and eat far more than you would have otherwise. The best course is to eat three small meals, with two or three small snacks in between.

5. Drink Plenty of Water

Water helps you feel full throughout your day, aiding your weight-loss efforts. Water also provides innumerable health benefits to your skin and your digestive and circulatory systems.

6. Switch to Healthy Snacks

Swap out the high-calorie or high-fat snacks in your diet for healthier alternatives. Fruits, low-fat string cheese, peanut butter, and whole-grain crackers are some good options. Create snacks that combine carbohydrates and proteins, like peanut butter on apple slices, as they will make you feel full longer.

7. Exercise as Often as You Can

Burning calories through physical activity is essential to weight loss. If you don't burn more calories than you eat, you won't lose weight. "People think they're too busy to walk 20 minutes a day or do a little weight training or ride a bike, and then they wonder why they can't lose weight," Gerbstadt says. "If you try to diet without exercise, it just takes that much more effort." Any physical activity, even long walks, will help.

8. Keep a Record

Food diaries are a proven aid to people pursing weight loss. Keep track of what you've eaten and how many calories the food contained. If you also keep a record of your exercise, you can compare how many calories you're burning to how many calories you're consuming.

Healthy and sustainable weight loss does not occur overnight, despite the promises of fad diets. Losing a pound or two a week is normal, and shows that you are adopting weight-loss habits as a part of your lifestyle.

Plastic Surgery and Other Treatments for Lip Lines
Tired of those fine lines around your lips? Learn what can be done to minimize the appearance of lip lines, from fillers and dermabrasion to plastic surgery.

For some women, especially smokers and sun worshippers, lip lines can become a bother and a reason they desire plastic surgery. Years of cigarettes and UV exposure can cause dozens of fine lines to collect around the lips.

"The best treatment for lip lines is prevention; protect the skin from sun and avoid tobacco products," advises Clinton Humphrey, MD, a facial plastic surgery fellow at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "Once lip lines are present, hyaluronic acid fillers may provide a small amount of improvement. Substantial improvement can be gained from dermabrasion, which is more effective for the upper lip than the lower lip."

Treatment options depend in part on how many lines you have, says Michael Olding, MD, chief of plastic surgery at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Many fine lines would require dermabrasion, whereas a few deep lines could be addressed with a filler, he says, adding that the choice comes down to filling the lines or flattening them.

Plastic Surgery: Minimizing Lip Lines

Options for minimizing lip lines include fillers (also known as soft tissue augmentation), dermabrasion, and laser skin resurfacing.

* Fillers for lip lines. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that can be injected into the skin to improve the look of fine lines. Hyaluronic acid adds volume between skin fibers that have lost it over time. Your doctor may offer several other filler options — your own fat, for example. Swelling from a pharmaceutical filler decreases over a few days; fat injections may take one to two weeks. Results from both are temporary and may diminish over time.

* Dermabrasion for lip lines. Dermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure in which a dermatologist scrapes away the surface of skin, evening out the look of fine lines. A chemical peel achieves a similar effect with the use of a caustic chemical that burns away the top layers of skin, revealing the smoother surface underneath. These procedures may require downtime of up to two weeks depending on the intensity of the treatment.

* Laser skin resurfacing for lip lines. Laser skin resurfacing uses a targeted beam of light (a skin laser) to even out the skin’s surface. For laser resurfacing and dermabrasion, you may have flaking for five to 10 days and notice results in 10 to 14 days; the skin may remain pink or flushed for one to six months.

Plastic Surgery for Lip Lines: What Procedure Is Right for You?

You and your plastic surgeon will discuss the options. Your skin type, desired result, and the amount of downtime you can manage will affect your choice.

Budget is also a concern, since most cosmetic surgeries are not covered by health insurance plans. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, average plastic surgeon fees for these procedures in 2007 were:

* Chemical peel: $744
* Laser skin resurfacing:$2,222
* Dermabrasion: $283
* Hyaluronic acid filler: $598

You will also have to budget for costs such as medication, ointments, staff, and facility use. Discuss with your plastic surgeon whether you will need to repeat the treatment in months or years.

Plastic Surgery: Not All Fillers Are Equal

The majority of facial fillers have an excellent safety profile, but some fillers may have unintended side effects. According to a study of 25 women who received polyalkylimide implant injections (implants which are essentially gel and water), researchers found that in the year after the procedure, some women experienced swelling, hardening, or pain at the injection site, and they also experienced body-wide reactions such as fevers and arthritis.

Remember, all cosmetic surgery has possible side effects. Find out about the side effects before deciding, but once you do, you can make a safe choice.

Rise, Shine, and Get Some Exercise
Learn the benefits of morning exercise. Find ways to stay motivated and avoid hitting that snooze button.

We all know that exercise is good for us, but when faced with the choice of a little extra shut-eye or breaking a sweat first thing in the morning, who wouldn't choose the snooze button?

Not so fast, say experts. Before turning over and pulling up the covers, consider the fact that exercise — and morning exercise in particular — has special benefits that can last all day.

Morning Exercise: The Benefits

The advantages of exercise are obvious. It can do everything from decreasing the risk of certain types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity to improving sleep and lessening feelings of depression and anxiety. And yet, according to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 45 percent of adults fulfill the surgeon general's physical activity recommendation of 30 minutes of intense aerobic activity three times per week.

Exercise at any time of the day is better than no exercise at all, but the benefits of a morning fitness routine are plenty.

"Morning exercise revs the metabolism and jump-starts energy levels, actually accelerating your ability to burn calories," says Amy Burleson Sullivan, PsyD, clinical health psychologist in the primary care section at the Dayton VA Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. "It gets the endorphins flowing so that when you're finished you have greater acuity, less anxiety, improved mood, and increased ability to concentrate, all of which contribute to a better day," explains Sullivan.

Practically speaking, people who exercise in the morning are more likely to keep up with their routine, as there is less chance for other responsibilities to get in the way as the day gets busier. Exercising in the evening can make it more difficult to go to sleep, whereas morning exercisers are free to relax with their workouts complete.

Morning Exercise: Tips to Stay Motivated

There are easy steps to help you stay on track.

* Get in the right mindset. Realize that exercise is hard work. Don't get discouraged if you don't see immediate results.

* Set small goals and remember, slow and steady wins the race.

* Get organized. Lay out shoes, socks, and workout clothes the night before to make the morning as easy as possible.

* Make a playlist. Don't forget an iPod, and make sure it has a variety of songs to prevent boredom.

* Rise and shine. Plug in your alarm clock across the room so that it can't be turned off without getting out of bed.

* Exercise with a friend. It's tempting to skip a workout when it's just you, but if someone is waiting for you, you tend to feel guiltier about letting them down.

* Have fun. "Make your workout enjoyable so you don't dread it," says David M. Williams, PhD, assistant professor at the Miriam Hospital and Alpert Medical School at Brown University in Providence, R.I.

* Adapt when necessary. "Set yourself up for success and schedule your workouts, but if something comes up, be willing to be flexible," says Stephanie Ramones, personal trainer and group exercise instructor at the Boston University Fitness and Recreation Center.

Morning workouts may be great for jump-starting the day, but if a conflict arises, try working out at night instead or adding time to the routine the next session. Remember, the most important thing isn't the time of day, but that you are finding time to exercise.

Perk Up Your Pecs

We could all use a little pick-me-up in the pectoral region, right? As we age, certain areas may begin to droop a little — you know what I'm talking about, ladies. There's no reason to give gravity all the control, though, especially when you can defy gravity with chest-pumping exercises like the classic push-up (modified here for beginners), the dumbbell chest press, and the chest fly.

Modified Push-up

1. Find a stable elevated bench on which to perform this exercise (if you're at home, the back of your couch or your coffee table will suffice; if you're at the gym, use a weight bench). Stand with the bench in front of you and place your palms on it. Your hands should be just wider than shoulder-width apart. Step your feet back behind you so that you're balancing in a prone position over the bench. You should be supporting your weight on the underside of your toes and the palms of your hands.

2. Bend your elbows and lower your entire body into push-up position. Your chest should line up with your hands, and your elbows should be bent in 90-degree angles at the midpoint of this exercise. Your neck should be straight and your eyes should be focused on the floor in front of you. Keep your abs tight. Exhale as you push back up to the starting position; repeat.

Dumbbell Chest Press

1. Lie on your back on a workout bench with your feet up on the bench. (You can also perform this exercise lying on a body ball with your feet firmly on the floor.) Hold the dumbbells over your chest with your arms extended toward the ceiling, palms facing forward. Inhale as you bend your elbows and lower the dumbbells to just above chest level. At the midpoint of this exercise, your upper arms should be parallel to the floor and your forearms perpendicular to the floor.

2. Inhale, opening your chest, and slowly lower the weights out in an arc to the sides of your chest. Exhale and raise the weights, again in an arc, back to the starting position; repeat.

Enjoy This Flavorful Fall Dessert

With Labor Day came the unofficial end of summer, but don't despair — there's a lot to love about fall. For one thing, it's when apples are in season and at their best. The perfect pick-me-up fruit, apples are juicy, flavorful, and full of fiber and vitamin C. They're delicious raw, of course, but they're also great baked. Try this recipe for a guilt-free dessert that won't won't throw off your calorie count for the day. Remember, apples are on my "always buy organic" list — conventional versions are sprayed with pesticides that you want to avoid. Check your local farmers' market for a nice selection of fresh and affordable apples and pears, and ask the farmers if their produce is organic. Also, be sure to look for all-natural cream cheese with minimal added ingredients

Baked Apple With Pear and Almond Filling

Ingredients


1 large apple, halved and cored
2 teaspoons reduced-fat cream cheese, divided
1 small pear, cored and diced very small
1/2 teaspoon light brown sugar
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons chopped almonds, divided
3 tablespoons water or apple juice

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350°F. Slice apple in half. Use a spoon or small ice cream scoop to scoop out some apple flesh from each half, making room for the filling. (You can eat the apple flesh if you like — no need to reserve.) Dab 1 teaspoon cream cheese in the cavity of each half.

Toss the diced pear with brown sugar and cinnamon. Spoon pear filling into each apple half. Sprinkle pear filling with almonds, pressing down to make them adhere. Place apple halves in a baking dish and add water or apple juice to the dish. Cover and bake for 30 minutes, then baste with juices. Bake uncovered for another 10 minutes, or until almonds are roasted.

Makes 2 servings.

Lead Levels in Many Lipsticks Higher Than Reported

WEDNESDAY, Sept. 2 (HealthDay News) -- A new analysis finds lead levels in many lipsticks are higher than those reported in 2007 by the consumer advocacy group Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

This new analysis, conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and published in a recent issue of the Journal of Cosmetic Science, used new techniques to determine the lead levels.

Despite the findings, the agency reiterated its stance on the issue.

"Lipstick is a product intended for topical use, and is only ingested incidentally and in very small quantities," said FDA spokeswoman Stephanie Kwisnek. "FDA does not consider the lead levels that it found in lipsticks to be a safety concern. FDA also notes that the lead levels that it found are lower than limits recommended by other public health authorities for lead in cosmetics, including lipstick."

The Personal Care Products Council, which represents the cosmetic and personal care products industry, agreed.

"[FDA] . . . found the lead levels present to be safe and well below limits recommended by international regulatory and public health authorities," the council said in a statement. "Consumers who use lipstick ingest only a tiny fraction of the lipstick they apply, and much of the lead that is ingested in that tiny fraction of lipstick is not biologically available because it is trapped inside larger particles and excreted by the body."

A medical expert agreed that the levels are still low, but wondered if they could build up to more toxic amounts, especially in fetuses and children.

"If you put this on your mouth every day, or little kids' mouths or when you're pregnant, is this small amount of lead building up in a way that would actually affect infants, fetuses and young children significantly over time?" asked Dr. Sean Palfrey, a professor of pediatrics and public health at Boston University School of Medicine and medical director of Boston's Lead Poisoning Prevention Program.

"[These levels are] unlikely to actively harm most children, but they could, so why do it?" he added.

This new study used a technology called "inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry" to assess lead levels in 22 different lipsticks, all in shades of red.

According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, the average level of lead found in the lipsticks -- 1.7 parts per million -- is more than 10 times higher than the standard imposed on candy.

The group called on the FDA to "immediately set standards to require manufacturers to minimize lead in lipstick to the lowest achievable levels."

FDA does have authority to regulate color additives in cosmetics, but not other ingredients.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics study from 2007 tested 33 top-brand lipsticks sold in the United States and showed that more than half had detectable levels of lead, with 11 exceeding 0.1 parts per million, the federal lead limit for candy.

L'Oreal, Cover Girl, Christian Dior and Maybelline were among the brands found to have high lead levels. For example, L'Oreal Colour Riche True Red had a lead content of 0.65 parts per million, L'Oreal Colour Riche Classic Wine had 0.58 parts per million and Cover Girl's IncrediFull Lipcolor Maximum Red had 0.56 parts per million.

In the current study, FDA said that lipsticks from three manufacturers had the highest amounts of lead, but it did not specify the brands.

"It's apparent that basically no lead is really good for you, so if you're a company that's making a cosmetic, why include lead at all when you can make a perfectly equal adequate product without lead?" Palfrey said.

The burden of facilitating change rests largely with consumers, he added.

"Don't buy it," Palfrey said.

On its Web site, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that "because no threshold for adverse health effects in young children has been demonstrated [no safe blood level has been identified], all sources of lead exposure for children should be controlled or eliminated."

Tweezing generally doesn't make hair grow back darker, and it's a perfectly adequate method of hair removal if you have only a few stray hairs on your chin. However, it can be tedious and time-consuming if you have a lot of ground to cover. To make it easier, invest in good tweezers and a high magnification mirror. Tweezing is easiest after a hot shower or bath. If the growth is a little heavier, you might try other temporary methods. (Shaving is effective on your legs, but not a good choice for your face.)

In addition to plucking, your options include waxing, bleaching, and chemical depilatories. Waxing keeps hair at bay four to six weeks. Plucking, bleaching, and depilatories last about two to three weeks or less. Each method has pros and cons. Waxing removes hair quickly and smoothly but can be painful and expensive if you get it done in a salon. You also run the risk of damaging your hair shafts and getting ingrown hairs. Bleaching is pretty easy, but it can burn and sting if you leave it on too long. Be sure to use a product made especially for the face, not the arms or legs. It's a good option if your hair color contrasts with your skin color. The day before, test a patch on your inner wrist to make sure you don't get redness or swelling. You should do a patch test with depilatories as well. These products, which come in aerosol, lotion, cream, and roll-on preparations, contain a chemical that dissolves the surface of the hair, separating it from the skin.

Read instructions very carefully; leaving a depilatory on too long can irritate your skin. Also, make sure you get a preparation made specifically for the part of your body you're targeting. A product aimed at hair on your legs could well be too strong for your face. In any case, you shouldn't use depilatories around your eyes or on inflamed or broken skin.

For longer-term hair removal, you can hit hair follicles with the more expensive options of lasers or electrolysis. Lasers work best when you're attacking dark hair on pale skin; however, some newer methods target other skin and hair combinations. It usually takes several treatments to get at hair in different stages of growth. Electrolysis also takes several treatments and can be painful; if your technician isn't properly trained, you could get an infection from an unsterile needle or even scarring. And both of these procedures can be costly. For either, be sure to check the credentials of the operator. Most states require people to be specially licensed to perform these procedures. If you can, get a recommendation from a dermatologist or your physician.

You may have seen ads for face creams and moisturizers that claim to slow hair growth. Try these products and see if you notice a difference. They may not actually slow growth but rather make it less obvious. That could be enough for you. If it isn't, you might ask your doctor about prescription medications to slow hair growth. One of the newest is Vaniqa (eflornithine HCl). After about eight weeks, you may find that you need to tweeze or wax less frequently.

How to Break Bad Habits

Old habits die hard, but the good news is that they do die. Don't lose hope or beat yourself up over it if you're having trouble breaking bad habits. It's not that easy to change your ways. Just keep plugging away.
Start by replacing old habits with new ones. The key is to learn how to take care of yourself and pamper yourself in ways that are life affirming rather than self-destructive. Learn how to deal with sabotaging emotions by establishing some healthy patterns of behavior and investing in your physical and emotional well-being.

If you judge yourself every time you're in front of a mirror, try focusing on the things you love about yourself. When was the last time you looked in the mirror and told yourself how great your features are and how beautiful you look?

If you're constantly looking to the media for stories about celebrity diets and weight loss, try finding more realistic role models — everyday people who've lost weight or achieved other goals similar to yours. They will be the most inspiring. Start paying attention to people you know.

If you tend to blow off your workouts until your vacation rolls around — or there's some other event, like a wedding, lighting a fire under you — ease yourself back into your daily workouts. Without commitment, you won't be able to achieve the goals you truly desire. Put your life in perspective. Everything is a choice — from how you feel when you wake up in the morning to whether or not you floss your teeth at night. To make the right choices, you need to ask the right questions: What is my true goal, and how are the choices I'm making going to help me achieve that goal?

Ingredients

6 medium pepper, green chile, dried, such as New Mexico, Anaheim, or ancho chiles, stemmed and seeded 14 ounce(s) tomatoes, fire-roasted, diced 1 large onion(s), coarsely chopped 4 clove(s) garlic, coarsely chopped 1 1/3 tablespoon chili powder 2 teaspoon cumin, ground 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup(s) beer, Mexican lager (such as Dos Equis or Corona) 1 tablespoon oil, canola 2 pounds beef, brisket, first-cut, trimmed flat 15 ounce(s) beans, pinto, rinsed

Preparation

1. Tear chiles into 1-inch pieces and place in a large bowl. Cover with hot water and let sit until softened, at least 20 minutes. Drain.

2. Preheat oven to 350°F. Place tomatoes and their juices, onion, garlic, chili powder, cumin, salt and the drained chile pieces in a food processor. Process until smooth. Transfer to a large bowl and stir in beer.

3. Heat oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add brisket and brown on all sides, about 6 minutes total. Pour the chile sauce over the meat and bring to a simmer.

4. Cover, transfer to the oven and bake for 2 hours. Stir in beans and continue baking until the meat is fall-apart tender, 45 minutes to 1 hour more.

5. Transfer the meat to a cutting board and pull apart into long shreds using two forks. Stir the shredded meat back into the sauce.
