Fitness & Health tip

Make the battle against childhood obesity a family fight

Being overweight isn't only a problem for adults. More children than ever are fighting the battle of the bulge. Even preschoolers are affected. A new study finds that one in five children is obese before starting school.

Here are some ways to help everyone in your family keep a healthy weight:

* Plan, prepare and eat healthy meals together as a family. Don't single out an overweight child with a separate meal.

* Clean out the junk food. Instead, stock up on healthy snacks such as fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grain crackers and low-fat cheese.

* Praise healthy choices. Compliment kids when they choose fruit instead of cookies or ride bicycles instead of watching TV.

To help fight childhood obesity, make eating healthy and exercising a part of your family's normal routine.
